THE 18th ARABIC AND MEDITERRANEAN FILM FESTIVAL OF CATALONIA
7 - 17 November 2024
Organized by the SODEPAU association, the Mostra de Cinema Àrab i Mediterrani de Catalunya (Arab and Mediterranean Film Festival of Catalonia) aims to open a window to Arab cinema in Catalonia, a little-known cinematography with a negligible presence on the big screens of our country.
It also aims to break the stereotypes about what we call the "Arab world," which from a Western perspective hides and simplifies, without much scrutiny, realities as rich, diverse, and complex as any other.
The festival also seeks to be an echo chamber for the desires, concerns, contradictions, and conflicts that the peoples of the Mediterranean are going through.
For this 18th edition, we are opening the following call for film submissions, which will end on May 31st, 2024.
- CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION
Fiction or documentary films of at least 60 minutes, directed and/or produced by filmmakers of Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian, Libyan, Egyptian, Sudanese, Yemeni, Omani, Qatari, Emirati, Saudi Arabian, Jordanian, Palestinian, Lebanese, Syrian, and Iraqi origin, in the last 5 YEARS.
The registration of the films will be done online, as indicated at the end of these guidelines. The correct registration and reception of the material will be communicated to all participants by email.
The organization will only contact the responsible persons of the selected films once the selection is made.
- SELECTED FILMS
If the film is selected, the following materials must be submitted before July 15th, 2024:
- Film Synopsis
- Director's Biography and Filmography
- Director's and Film's Photographs in JPG format, 300dpi
- Film Poster in JPG format, 300dpi
- Trailer
- Dialogue list in Timecode in English and/or French
- FILMS SUBTITLING:
The films will be screened in their original version with subtitles in Catalan. The festival will take care of subtitling the selected films.
- TRANSPORT
The festival will only cover the expenses of the transport of the selected films during and at the place of exhibition, and their return to the distributor once the festival is over, as previously agreed.
- PROMOTION AND DISSEMINATION OF THE SELECTED FILMS
The film's copyright owner authorizes the festival to use images and inserts (up to 3 minutes) from their film for the communication campaign and in the materials and dissemination platforms of the festival itself.
- SELECTION PROCESS AND JURY
The festival organization will appoint a jury made up of professionals and people linked to the world of cinema, audiovisual, communication, culture, or social activism residing in Catalonia.
After watching all the films registered in the festival, the organization will select the productions that will be part of the Official Selection, 5 fiction features and 5 documentaries, that will be screened at the Filmoteca de Catalunya and the Zumzeig cinema.
The jury will watch the films in the Official Selection and decide the Best Fiction Film and Best Documentary awards.
The audience attending the screenings will select, through voting, the Audience Award.
The festival organization will give special mentions, if deemed appropriate.
- AWARDS
Best Fiction Film Jury Award: €1,000 + inclusion in the festival catalog for its dissemination in the non-theatrical cultural circuit under previously agreed conditions.
Best Documentary Film Jury Award: €1,000 + inclusion in the festival catalog for its dissemination in the non-theatrical cultural circuit under previously agreed conditions.
Audience Award: Inclusion in the festival catalog for its dissemination in the non-theatrical cultural circuit under previously agreed conditions.
Special mentions: inclusion in the festival catalog for dissemination in the non-theatrical cultural circuit under previously agreed conditions.
- SUBMISSIONS AND TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Submissions will be made online through the registration form (click here), which will also be available on Mostra's website (https://www.mostracinearab.com).
The deadline for submissions is May 31, 2024, and late submissions will not be accepted. The festival reserves the right to extend the submission deadline.
